Facing the Flames will spotlight the exciting history of Waco's fire department, from its founding in 1873 to present day. Featuring antique uniforms and tools from area fire departments. Regular admission is $2-3. Visiting hours are Friday through Sunday 2-5 pm. Special tours are welcome and can be arranged by calling 753-5166.

Texas Roots: The Art of Lee Herring

The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum presents Texas Roots: The Art of Lee Herring from August 29th to January 11th. The exhibit features over 20 works of art by the 2007 State of Texas Artist. These works are available for purchase and a percentage of the sale price will be donated to the Texas Ranger Museum's Bicentennial Fund to renovate and expand the museum in preparation for the Texas Ranger Bicentennial in 2023. Marching to Zion: Celebrating and Preserving Black Sacred Music

A three-day series of lectures, panels and unforgettable performances. This year's Symposium will feature a keynote by Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon, one of the heroes of the Civil Rights Movement; Dr. James Abbington, one of the nation's leading composers and conductors of African American sacred choral music; Dr. Dwandalyn Reece from the National Museum of African American History and Culture; and several other well-known experts in the field of black sacred music and preservation. The Symposium will also feature two nights of gospel music celebrations that are open to the public, and will culminate with a gospel brunch featuring a concert by the Jones Family Singers. Jubilee Theatre presents "The Piano Lesson". It is 1936 and Boy Willie arrives in Pittsburgh from the South in a battered truck loaded with watermelons to sell. He has an opportunity to buy some land down home, but he has to come up with the money right quick. He wants to sell an old piano that has been in his family for generations, but he shares ownership with his sister and it sits in her living room. She has already rejected several offers because the antique piano is covered with incredible carvings detailing the family's rise from slavery. Boy Willie tries to persuade his stubborn sister that the past is past, but she is more formidable than he anticipated.
